Environment and climate

Climate change presents the single biggest threat to sustainable development everywhere. Its widespread and unprecedented impact disproportionately burden the poorest and most vulnerable. Urgent action to halt climate change and deal with its impact is integral to successfully achieving all Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

SIS/ISO has several standards that play an essential role in the climate and environment agenda, helping to quantify and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to climate change and promote good practice in environmental management. For example,

• ISO 14001 on Environmental management systems covers overall frameworks, audits, communications, labelling, life-cycle analysis and methods for organizations to become more environmentally sustainable.

• The ISO 14064 series gives specifications for the quantification, monitoring and validation/verification of greenhouse gas emissions.

• ISO 14067 specifies the principles, requirements and guidelines for quantifying and reporting the carbon footprint of products.

• ISO 14007 provides guidelines for determining environmental costs and benefits in monetary terms.

• ISO 14090 helps organizations to adapt to climate change.

• ISO 50001 supports organizations in all sectors to increase energy efficiency.

SIS has supported companies to apply environmental management and carbon footprint standards in South and Southeast Asia, and East Africa. In SIS projects that do not have a direct focus on environmental standards, environment is still included as a cross-cutting issue.
